Frequently asked questions

We understand the responsibility of looking after precious heirlooms. Every precaution is taken to ensure that your originals are treated with the respect they deserve. All of the work is done in-house in our secure studio. Before any scanning commences a careful inventory is taken and shared with you. Once the project is completed the inventory is double checked before we return the originals.

Use the START ORDER button on our website. Estimate how many Prints / Slides / Negatives / Albums you would like scanned and select the options for Resolutions and Deliveries. An estimated price is calculated, if you are happy to proceed a 25% deposit is required to commence the order. Once we take receipt of your originals we complete the order and send you a request for the balance of payment, this is based on the actual number of scans done. Once the balance of payment is made we provide a link to YOUR GALLERY, a private beautifully organised online space. We’ll also arrange the safe return of your precious originals.

We scan orders and send you a link to YOUR GALLERY within 5 working days of receiving your originals. At times this can vary, if you are in a hurry please let us know and we will do our best to expedite your order at no additional charge. If you have an urgent need such as a birthday or funeral there is an option on the order for a 48 hour turnaround from receipt of your originals.

It is important to carefully package your originals.

Grouping: If you would like to view your online galleries in or sub-galleries) you will need to group your originals in the same way. Do this by placing each group in its own container, we recommend envelopes, ziplock bags or boxes, name each group thoughtfully. For albums you can use sticky notes to communicate the different groups.

Packaging: Once after you have grouped your photos, place them into a sturdy mailing box or padded bag. Where possible use an additional layer of plastic to protect your bag from moisture.

Make sure you include a printout of your order, including your name and return address inside your container. Seal your package carefully, ensure all openings and edges are securely taped.

We take an initial payment through our website at the time you place your order. The initial payment is 25% of the cost based on your estimation of how many originals you think you may have. When we complete the scanning the final number of scans is calculated and we will send you a request for payment. If your initial estimation is way off we’ll get in touch to give you a revised estimate for your approval before we get started.

We keep secure backups of your images on our local server until they are uploaded to YOUR GALLERY. We know how precious your photos and keepsakes are, and we treat them with the care they deserve. We follow careful handling procedures and keep your items safely stored while they are with us. Although it’s extremely rare, unexpected events can occasionally occur. If any damage or loss happens while your originals are in our care, we’ll talk with you to find a fair and reasonable way forward. It’s also one of the reasons digitising your memories is so valuable — once scanned, your images can be backed up, shared and protected for the long term, even if something were to happen to the physical originals.

Absolutely. Life is full of moments – some sweet, some silly, some very private, and we treat them all with the same respect and care. Your images are handled confidentially at every step, and only our team members involved in the scanning process ever see them. Once your scans are complete, your digital files stay on our system for 90 days before being securely deleted.

Memory Lane was founded by Dave Petschack in 2025, Dave has been lucky to have worked with images for his entire professional life. Starting in the pre-digital days working in photographic dark rooms, hand-retouching photos for advertising and eventually moving into a long career in creative design and digital marketing.

A few years ago, while sorting through his own boxes of travel photos and family albums, heI began scanning, restoring, and organising them to share with friends and family. Watching people light up as long-lost memories came back to life, he realised there was an opportunity to use his creative skills in a different way.

And so, in 2025, Memory Lane Images was born.

We use a variety of advanced scanning technologies and will do our absolute best to digitise every image you provide. However, certain items cannot be processed through our high-speed scanners due to the risk of equipment damage. This includes prints that are:

  • Mounted, framed, or in protective covers
  • Fragile, torn, or physically damaged
  • Contaminated with dirt, grease, or sticky adhesive residue

Don’t worry, these items can still be preserved! We can digitise them using a careful manual process via flatbed or overhead scanning. As this requires additional time and handling, a surcharge applies. We will always review your originals first and contact you to discuss any additional costs before proceeding.

When you open Your Gallery you will have the option to download individual images or the whole gallery.

Print resolutions

Standard resolution captures all the original detail and is ideal for sharing online or printing at home. As a general guide, it’s suitable for prints up to around twice the original size.

High resolution captures the finest detail and is best for professional printing, including large enlargements such as wall prints and photo books.

Please note: a scan is only as good as the original. Images that are out of focus or very grainy won’t be improved by higher-resolution scanning.

35mm slide and negative resolutions

The same principles apply as with print scanning. However, because slides and negatives are much smaller than prints, we use a different scanning process and a higher base resolution to capture as much detail as possible.

If you would like more specific resolution information please refer to our Formats and Prices page.
